Lisa Graff has written magical story about discovering your true talents. I think this is a perfect partner for "Savvy". You need tone able escape into another world to enjoy this one.
Abby used to be part of the popular group of girls, until she decided it wasn't worth it anymore. She was tired of being "fake". Now she wanders alone, and befriends some unusual characters: Anoop and his soccer-loving friends, Anders and his shell-shocked father, and a fox who is watching out for her. This is a story of growth and new beginnings. I will ait it was confusing at times, and a little unsettling.
I loved this book when I first read it in 3rd grade. The death of author E.L. Konigsburg spurred me to pull this book off the shelf once again. I still love it today! I love the adventure of running away and living in a museum. It's strange, but I had forgotten the big ideas of the story - such as the mystery of the statue - but I still remembered the details: matching in the fountain, hiding in the bathroom stalls, and 50 cent lunches at the automat. Love, love, love this book!
So much potential in this story of immigration! The Matchbox Diary is a great grandfather's recollections of growing up based on small items tucked inside matchboxes before he could read and write. What would you put in a matchbox? Great companion to "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge" by Mem Fox.
This tale is rich with the culture and language of Cameroon, Africa. Although it may be difficult to understand at times, the message of a child wanting to do things her own way and the consequences that follow are universal. Yoyo finally learns the importance of "beginning with the end in mind".
I just love when new books arrive - it feels like Christmas! This sweet story is one of our new ones. Kids will love how the pictures don't quite agree with little bunny's statements about her expertise.
What a fun early chapter book! Robot and Monkey are best friends. Robot loves scary movies, but Monkey hates them. Monkey hates to lose games, while Robot just loves to play. Students will laugh at the silly things monkey says and does. I hope there are more adventures to come!
This beautifully illustrated book is FULL of facts about frogs from all over the world. Yet it is also full of sensory language and onomatopoeia - short paragraphs of amazingly vivid language. Wow! Extra facts are included in the back, as well as information about frogs in danger and websites.
This creative book draws the reader in with simple drawings, making the reader eager to find out what Pluto's secret is. Without realizing it - the reader is learning new facts about famous astronomers, planets, and the Kaiper Belt. A fun way to learn new things!
Love the photos on this new science book! It's full of scrumptious vocabulary too - like "sticky and gooey" jam, "soft and dusty and very fluttery" butterflies, and "wobbly and runny and slimy" raw eggs. A great teaching book.
A fun new read for our youngest readers! Do you have a big imagination? Super Chicken sure does! Join him on his adventures.
Poetry. Poetry!
April is National Poetry Month and we are celebrating this week in the library. I couldn't wait to try some of Sara Holbrook's poetry. It's funny and a little sarcastic - perfect for that 5th grade boy or girl heading off to middle school. We just won't tell them that it's sensitive too! I'm glad I tries this series. Abby is surrounded by sisters and brothers who are smarter and more talented. Yet she doesn't give up. She sets goals for herself and works hard. She has friends to help her. And she always has her writing.
This is a great series for 3rd graders, plus some older and younger readers too. Maybe for students who enjoy Ivy & Bean. Thanks Sadie for recommending this exciting read. The more books I read by Peg Kehret, the more I amazed by her writing talent.
If you are looking for a book with lots of adventure, "The Runaway Twin" will deeply satisfy you. This story is sad, scary, and sweet too. The ending... Well, I won't give that away. Blue Balliett has done it again! Adventure and mystery are the name if the game --- but this one is much sadder and more "real". Early and her mom Summer and brother Jubie end up in a homeless shelter when their dad mysteriously disappears. Thankfully Early doesn't give up hope when all those around her have. This is a powerful, yet entertaining, read.
